It Started With a Question, Not a Trend

Most outerwear starts with a trend report or a sales forecast. Ours started with a question: what would we actually wear when the temperature drops and staying outside isn't optional?

That's where the Boreal Arctic Winter Parka came from. Not a colorway decision. Not a response to what everyone else was putting out. We were frustrated with winter jackets that looked serious on the hanger but soaked through in wet snow, or ones that kept you warm standing still but turned clammy the moment you started moving. We wanted something you could wear on a brutal January commute, a weekend hike through frozen terrain, and still feel like a functioning human being at the end of it.

So we started with the conditions we were designing for. The silhouette came after.

Finding the Right Materials Before Designing Anything

A lot of brands pick a design and then find materials to match. We do it the other way around.

We started with performance. Shell fabric samples came in from mills in Germany, Japan, and Canada: waxed ripstop nylon, bonded softshells, 3-layer laminates, and plain-weave nylons with DWR coatings. We soaked them, scraped them across rough surfaces, folded them repeatedly in freezing temperatures, and checked whether the DWR treatment held after repeated washing.

One rule we kept coming back to: if the fabric can't handle what we throw at it on the workbench, it has no business being on someone's back at minus twenty.

We landed on a 70-denier 3-layer ripstop shell bonded to a moisture-wicking interior mesh, paired with 700-fill-power responsibly sourced duck down. The shell weight gives it enough toughness to resist snagging on brush or pack straps. The down-to-shell ratio keeps the whole thing packable without sacrificing warmth in sustained cold. A PFC-free DWR coating handles wet snow and light rain without the chemistry we're trying to move away from.

Design Is Mostly About What You Leave Out

Once the materials were locked, the design process became an exercise in restraint.

We weren't interested in adding pockets or zippers just to make it look technical. Every detail had to earn its place. A helmet-compatible storm hood that cinches down without blocking peripheral vision. A draft flap behind the main zipper so wind doesn't cut straight through when you're moving. Interior wrist gaiters that seal the cuff gap without bunching under gloves. Two hand pockets, two chest pockets, and one interior drop pocket, each with a YKK zipper and a pull big enough to operate with mittens on.

We ran through seven rounds of samples, adjusting the hood volume, hem length, and baffle width each time. The goal was a parka that felt intuitive to layer under and move in, not one that required a manual.

The Stuff Nobody Talks About (But Everyone Notices Eventually)

We spend a lot of time on the parts of a jacket that don't show up in product photos.

Taped seams at every horizontal stitch line where water could pool and push through. Baffles sewn in a box-stitch pattern so the down doesn't shift and leave cold spots over time. A chin guard stitched into the collar so the zipper doesn't drag across your face. Hem and cuff adjusters that you can tighten one-handed. Draft tubes behind both chest pockets so they don't act as vents in a headwind.

Nobody reads a product page looking for chin guards and baffle stitching. But these are exactly the things that separate a jacket you trust from one you tolerate.

Sixty Days of Wearing It Hard

Before anything goes into production, we wear it. A lot.

We send samples to team members and a group of people who agree to actually use the piece hard through real winter conditions for 60 days, then report back honestly about what fails, what irritates them, and what holds up. For the Boreal, feedback came in from testers in Minnesota, northern Norway, and British Columbia.

Most of it was positive. The down loft held after repeated compression in a pack. The storm hood stayed put in sustained wind without needing constant readjustment. Warmth was consistent across a range of activity levels.

Three things needed fixing. The main zipper pull was too small to grip reliably with thick gloves, so we widened it. The wrist gaiters were elasticated too tight for layering over a midlayer, so we adjusted the stretch. One tester flagged that the chest pocket zipper pulls rattled against the shell while hiking, so we added a small fabric loop to secure them when not in use.

We don't move to production until we're confident the jacket will perform through the first full winter, not just the first storm.

How We Actually Make It

Once everything is finalized, production starts with manufacturing partners who specialize in technical outerwear construction, primarily in Portugal and South Korea.

Every batch gets inspected before leaving the factory: seam tape adhesion, zipper function across temperature ranges, down fill weight per chamber, shell fabric weight and coating integrity. If something doesn't pass, we hold the shipment. We'd rather delay a drop than send out a jacket that fails someone when the weather actually gets serious.

The Part That's Up to You

The last step isn't something we control.

A parka earns its place when the conditions get bad enough that you stop thinking about what you're wearing and just move. When it's the one you reach for before a long drive through a snowstorm, or the one that gets thrown in the car every November and doesn't come out until April.

That's what we're actually building toward. Not something that photographs well at base camp. Something that keeps you warm when it matters and asks nothing from you in return.

We're currently working on the Spring 2027 collection, which includes a lightweight ripstop shell jacket and an updated midlayer fleece designed to pair with the Boreal. Same process, same questions, same focus on the details that hold up under pressure.
